HISTORY

PFLAG was incorporated in 1981 as a national organization. Now, with 200,000 members and supporters, and local affiliates in more than 500 communities across the U.S. and abroad, PFLAG is the largest grassroots-based family organization of its kind. PFLAG is a non-profit organization and is not affiliated with any religious or political institution. For a complete history of national PFLAG, click here.

Local History:  In 1989, a group of concerned Cape Cod parents started a PFLAG chapter under the auspices of First Parish UU Church in Brewster, the first Unitarian-Universalist church in the country to officially welcome gays. Our chapter was chartered by PFLAG National in 1995 and we achieved tax-exempt status.

Today we are an active member of the community, with about 70 dues-paying members and over a hundred on our mailing list. We educate ourselves and our community through monthly programs led by members and guest speakers, provide informational brochures, a lending library of books and tapes, a speaker’s bureau, assistance to educators and classes, a booth at fairs, media appearances, and our newsletter.
