2013 Programming, 1st Quarter
PFLAG isn’t just for support; it’s also for education & advocacy! At most of
our monthly meetings, whether in Brewster or Falmouth, we devote the first half
of the meeting to support, and the second half to an educational or advocacy-related
program. The lineup for our next three meetings is as follows.
Brewster May 20
We have invited our three scholarship winners ($2000 each) to this meeting, so we can meet them and hear about their plans for the future.
The program portion of this meeting will be about the work performed by the Massachusetts Commission for LGBT Youth and by Child and Family Services on Cape Cod. Kristen Davies will be our speaker. She is a member of the Commission and is also Coordinator of the Children’s Behavioral Health Initiative at Child and Family Services.
The Massachusetts Commission for LGBT Youth is an independent agency of the Commonwealth whose mission is to recommend and advocate to all branches of state government effective policies, procedures, and resources for LGBT youth.
Child and Family Services is a non-profit organization whose staff often works with LGBT youth in crisis. They offer mental health and child welfare services, outreach, community counseling, and other specialized services and programs.
Falmouth May 28 PFLAG meeting
Sarah Pearlman will discuss her book entitled
Mother–Talk. It is a collection of stories of 24 mothers:
12 found out a daughter was a lesbian, and 12 learned
that a child intended to transition to male. This
groundbreaking book will take readers into the lives of
these women as they tell about their struggle to come
to terms with the loss of a daughter who has changed
sex—or the loss of an anticipated relationship with a
daughter, now a lesbian, who lives in a different world
and will lead a different life.
Sarah Pearlman is a well-known author on lesbian
and transgender issues and is nationally recognized
for her pioneering role in establishing a psychology of
lesbians, based not on pathology or deviance, but on
the experience and concerns of lesbians.
Please join us for any or all of these meetings, held from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at First Parish Brewster and from 6:30 to 8:00 PM at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Falmouth. You will be welcomed warmly, listened to respectfully without judgment, and hopefully stimulated by the discussion. Your confidentiality is assured.
